SUNDAY FUNDAY: PAROLS

I worked with Mingei International Museum to create parol-themed illustrations for their Sunday Funday program. Mingei is dedicated to furthering the understanding of art of the people from all cultures of the world, and for this month, they wanted to highlight Christmas in the Philippines. Christmas is the largest and longest holiday in the Philippines, running from September through February, and it is tradition to honor the birth of Jesus through light and parol festivals.

With this in mind, I came up with several iterations of the parols, or lanterns.

Ultimately, we decided to include familial depictions with Filipino characteristics so that receivers could best relate to this light festival experience. The final illustration included a Filipino mom and child looking up to and admiring the lit parols at nighttime. This was made into postcards and stickers to supplement Sunday Funday craft packages.

Also in the craft packages included paper straws, tissue, and pipe cleaners so that kids could build their own parols at home with printed and online instruction from Mingei and PASACAT, a Philippine Performing Arts company. These packages were sent to hundreds of San Diegan families stuck at home during the pandemic.
